We had traveled to Canberra to spend some time with family and friends prior to and during Xmas. One of the friends we visited was celebrating her 60th, and in talking with her about my experiences walking Kokoda, she said "there is a person here that you should meet, his is name Brian Honner" And yes his father was Ralph Honner .
I was lucky enough and also priviliged to be able to spend some time talking with Brian (see photo), about his father and a little about his own military history.
When Brian was young, he had an understanding that his father had been in the army and been to war however did not realise or understand the deeds that he had performed throughout his distinguished career.
In fact, he had no recollection of their father during the war when he returned from the middle east, "Ralph and Marjory Honner had seven priceless days together at Nedlands. But if the temporary resumption of marital bliss seemed perfectly normal to wife and husband, it constituted a strange experience for sons Richard and Brian. Who was this man? When Brian went to kindergarten at the local convent soon after his father's return, he informed the nuns, 'there's a strange man cuddling Mummy in the bedroom'..... years later Brian was told, 'I had the Nuns in stiches' " quote from Ralph Honner by Peter Brune page 141. Then it was onto Kokoda.
Brian also told me about a ceremony that he attended a few months earlier on the Gold Coast. The Rotary club of the Gold Coast has created a memorial to the veterans of Kokoda - The Kokoda Memorial - some years earlier, and in 2008, there was to be a new addition of a "wall" that is made up of several panels that depict the Australian action in Kokoda.
For me this is a must to visit, and as we will be in the Gold Coast vicinity for holidays at the end of the year this will be the perfect opportunity.
